Rebels Use Late Surge In Mojo Loss

Midland, TX – Permian and Midland Lee battled to a 2-1 close game through four innings on Friday afternoon.  The Rebels used a six-run fifth frame to put the contest out of reach and hand the Panthers an 8-3 district loss at Ernie Johnson Field.

hernandezEaston Hernandez led off with sharply hit line drive to left field, but the Permian bats were unable to get him back home.  The senior centerfielder finished the afternoon batting 2-for-4 with a pair of base hits and an RBI.  Midland Lee batters had better luck in the bottom half of the first inning.  Back-to-back base hits to left field setup the game’s first run.  Jared Carrasco was in position to make the play on a ball hit into shallow left and throw out the runner at second base.  Unfortunately, a run scored on the play for a 1-0 Rebels lead.  Aleck Villa was hit by a pitch in the top of the second inning.  He would also be the only runner to get on base by either team the remainder of the inning.

Lee added another run in the bottom of the third.  A double and two singles were converted into a 2-0 Rebels lead after three innings of play.  The Panthers were able to cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth.  Manny Guerrero led off with a walk and Tanner Adams did the same to post runners on first and second base.  Teo Banks sent a hard hit ground ball to right field to plate Guerrero.  A flyout and strikeout left two runners stranded in scoring position.

The wheels fell off of the Mojo cart in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Consecutive base hits were followed by two-run triple.  Then, back-to-back singles were followed by a homerun over the left field fence.  By the time the dirt had settled, the Rebels held a commanding 8-1 lead.

The Panthers were able to cut into the lead in their final at-bat.  Carrasco got onboard with a base hit to left.  Brito joined him after getting hit by a pitch.  A sacrifice grounder moved the runners to second and third with two outs.  Hernandez’s RBI single to right field and Guerrero’s RBI base hit to left field made it 8-3 in favor of Lee.  A strikeout ended Mojo’s attempt at a rally.
