Bulldogs Take Panthers In Seventh

Odessa, TX – Tuesday’s district showdown between Permian and Midland High began with each team scoring early.  After four scoreless innings, it came down to the final at-bat to determine a winner.  The Bulldogs claimed the 5-4 decision at McCanlies Field.

Midland High got on the scoreboard in the opening frame.  A walk and base hit set up runners on first and second with one out.  A pair of RBI singles gave the Bulldogs a quick 3-0 lead.  Mojo got out the inning when Taylor Sullivan caught a runner trying to steal third base.  Permian was able to match the effort in the bottom of the second inning.  Easton Hernandez and Isaiah Flores got aboard courtesy of a pair of walks.  Both runners advanced when Sullivan hit into a fielder’s choice.  Noey Brito reached first on a called third strike that made its way to the backstop.  Both runners scored on the play.   Brito made his way to second and was able to score on a wild pitch to knot the game at 3-3.

The contest became a defensive battle with both teams finding it difficult to get on base.  The Panthers made some headroom in the bottom of the fourth.  Flores sent to hard hit shot to right field.  Brito followed with a hit to left centerfield to put two on with one out.  A strikeout and flyout ended the inning with both runners stranded.

With the game still deadlocked at 3-3, Midland High broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning.  The Bulldogs led off with a successful bunt down the third base line.  Two pitches later, Mojo gave up a homerun over the left field fence.  Two flyouts and a ground out ended the threat, but Permian now trailed 5-3 going into the last at-bat.

Aleck Villa led off with a dribbler to left field.  Caden Bedrick slapped a shot to left centerfield to put to put runners on the corners.  The next batter struck out for the first out.  The Panthers pulled to within one when Sullivan hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Villa to make it 5-4.  Flores drew a walk to put two on with two outs.  A pop-up to the shortstop ended the game with Permian short a run.
