Mojo Sweeps OHS With Extra Inning Run
Friday, April 20, 2018 09:07

ODESSA - Permian completed the season series sweep of Odessa High with an eight-inning 3-2 decision at McCanlies Field on Saturday.  Mojo broke the 2-2 tie when Taylor Sullivan slapped a two-out RBI single to shallow left field to plate the winning run.

sullivanSenior right-hander Seth Higdon got the start on the mound for the Panthers. He struck out four batters, while limiting the Bronchos to three hits and two runs through his six and two-thirds innings. Sophomore Noey Brito took over in the seventh frame to finish the game. Brito recorded a strikeout and one hit, while giving up no runs or walks.

Permian scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third. Brito led off with a walk and advanced to second base on an Isaiah Flores sacrifice bunt down the first base line.  A two-out RBI double to right field by Caden Bedrick plated Brito. Odessa High answered with a run in the top of the fourth after a walk and triple to knot the game at 1-1.

The Bronchos got two runners on base with the assistance of a fielding error and free trip to first in the fifth inning, but a strikeout and sliding catch in right field by Daniel Enriquez snuffed out the threat.

Permian regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Manny Guerrero and Tanner Adams were both hit by pitches to get aboard. After the next batter struck out, Guerrero tagged up on Sullivan's long flyball to right field to post runners on the corners with two outs. Aleck Villa followed and belted a shot to centerfield to score Guerrero.

In the top of the seventh, OHS caught a break and tied the game with the assistance of a pair of Mojo miscues. After a ground out and strikeout, a base hit turned into a triple... courtesy of the first of two outfielder errors in the inning. A single to left field followed and the game was knotted at 2-2.

The Panthers were unable to produce a run in the bottom half of the seventh, forcing an extra inning.  Two ground outs and a strikeout in the top of the eighth was the beginning of the end for Odessa High.  It was time for the Black Pack Attack to put the game away.

The first two Mojo batters grounded out and flew out.  Adams entered the batter's box with empty bases and two outs.  With a 1-1 count, the junior first baseman and designated hitter uncorked a two-bagger to right field.  Sullivan stepped to the plate and sent a hard hit grounder between the third baseman and shortstop that was scooped up by the left fielder.  Christian LaChance, pinch running for Adams, beat the throw from the outfield to home for the winning run.

The Panthers' 3-2 victory caps off a three-game district sweep of the Bronchos this season.  It also affords the Permian baseball program a chance to finish the regular season with a winning record... a milestone in recent years... having a district record with more wins than losses.  It's also worth mentioning that this is the inaugural season at Permian for head coach Tate Criswell.  This year's varsity is still a young team as well - consisting of six seniors, eight juniors, seven sophomores, and a freshman.  It's very encouraging to see this team has come together and gelled as a group.

The Panthers will host Amarillo Tascosa on Tuesday (Senior Day) and finish the District 2-6A schedule on the road on Friday.  Post-season (playoff) hopes for Permian can become a reality next week.  Also, Midland Lee and Odessa High are tied for second and just one game ahead of Permian.  The Rebels and Bronchos play each other twice in the coming week's finale.  Mojo has the district series advantage over both.
