Two Big Innings Lift Midland Lee Over PHS
Wednesday, April 04, 2018 07:17

MIDLAND - Originally scheduled for Tuesday, this afternoon's game between Permian and Midland Lee ended in a 9-3 Mojo road loss. The Rebels took advantage of a three-run third inning and a five-run fifth.

floresA total of six batters made plate appearances in the first inning. Seth Higdon struck out all three of Lee's batters. In the second frame, Daniel Enriquez got on base after being hit by a pitch. Nate Kizziar followed and sent a shot to left field to plate Enriquez for a 1-0 lead. The Rebels answered with a pair of doubles to tie the game at 1-1.

The Panthers went down in order in the top of the third inning.  Permian batting was limited to a total of four hits for the day. In the bottom half of the inning, three consecutive Lee batters were hit to occupy all bases with one out. A three-run RBI triple to right centerfield gave the Rebels a 4-1 lead.  Higdon benched the next two batters to get out of the frame.  He finished with 11 strikeouts over four and two-thirds innings.

Permian put two runners in scoring position in the fourth, but a strikeout and ground out left both stranded. Higdon struck out three of the four Rebels in the bottom of the inning.

Lee converted a triple, four base hits, and two walks into a five run bottom of the fifth to extend the Rebels' lead to 9-1. Permian got a run back with the assistance of three walks in the sixth. Again two Mojo runners were left stranded.

Trailing by seven runs, Permian's Nick Chavez led off with a base hit in the top of the seventh. Noey Brito matched that to put two runners aboard. A hard hit shot to the shortstop was turned into a double play, but Chavez was able to score. A flyout to centerfield ended the game with Permian being six runs short.

The Rebels will have to visit McCanlies Field on Friday for the final clash of the three game district series.  Mojo thumped Lee 11-3 in the first meeting on March 17.
