Mojo Rocks Tournament of Champions
Sunday, March 04, 2018 07:19

ODESSA - The annual Tournament of Champions was held over the weekend.  This year, the Panthers played the three-day event on the home confines of McCanlies Field.  Two one-run decisions and two 10-run rule games led up to the finale with Weatherford.

britoMojo started the tournament in grand fashion on Thursday. The Panthers uncorked a seven-run opening frame and cruised to a 13-1 five-inning ambush of El Paso Eastwood. Noey Brito drove in five runners with the assistance of an RBI double in the first frame and an RBI triple in the third. Permian extended the 7-0 lead with a run in the second inning, and added four more in the third.

Pitcher Peyton Hutson limited the Troopers to five hits and one run over the five inning span, while striking out seven. The Panthers had 11 hits in the game.  Brito, Tanner Adams, and Christian Tschauner each contributed multiple hits.

The Panthers won a pair of one-run games on Friday.  Permian jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the morning game with Andrews.  The Mustangs chipped away at the Mojo lead but came up short in the 7-6 PHS victory.  In a tough fought afternoon clash with Canyon Randall, it was the Black Cats coming up victors of the 5-4 slugfest.  Both teams scored in the first and fourth innings.  Permian collected three runs to Randall's two in the opening frame.  Each added a pair of runs in the fourth.

In the final day, Plainview started the game with a run.  It would be the only runner they would plate the rest of the game.  Permian answered with five runs in the bottom of the first, and seven runs in the second inning to cruise to a 12-1 five inning shellacking.  The afternoon finale proved to be a little more difficult.  Weatherford posted two runs in the second inning and another four in the forth before the Panthers were able to get on the board.  A Mojo run in the fifth and another in the seventh resulted in a 6-2 loss.  It was the only defeat Permian suffered in the three day event, as the Panthers finished the tournament with an impressive 4-1 record.

In overall tournament stats, Tschauner posted a .538 tourney batting average.  He was 5-for-13 at the plate, recording five RBI's and contributing three runs.  Brito finished with nine RBI's.  Seth Higdon pitched six innings - striking out eight batters, allowing seven hits, and giving up four runs.  Hutson went five innings - striking out seven, allowing five hits, and limiting the opponents to one run.
