Late Surge Falls Short At Odessa High
Friday, April 21, 2017 07:40

ODESSA - A late Permian surge in the seventh inning was unable to make up the difference in another district loss to Odessa High at Pressly Field.  The Panthers trailed by six runs going into the final at-bat.  Mojo posted a pair of runs on the board but fell 6-2 to the Bronchos.

banksPermian opened the game sending four batters to the plate, with Tanner Adams leading off with a base hit. He would get stranded at second base. Odessa High utilized a double and three singles to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame.

The Panthers had an opportunity to answer in the top of the second. Rhett Bratcher led off with a walk, and Hector Arevalo slapped a double to centerfield. The two runners were left stranded at second and third base with no runs to show for the effort. The Bronchos were retired in order to complete the second inning. Two Permian batters drew walks in the third, but both were left on base. For the third straight inning, the Panthers couldn't find a way to convert runners into runs.

Odessa High added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, with the assistance of two singles and a two-bagger to right field to extend their lead to 5-0.  After drawing a walk and a base hit to left field, Permian watched another two runners become stagnant in the top of the fourth.  At the end of the fifth inning, the Panthers were limited to a total of three hits, while the Bronchos had collected nine.  Seven Mojo runners were left stranded on base through these same five innings.

OHS added another run in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a walk and single to centerfield. With their backs to the wall, the Panthers gave one last valiant effort in the top of the seventh. Taylor Sullivan led off with a single to left field. Easton Hernandez followed with a one-out double to right field. With runners on second and third, Tyson Banks stepped up to the plate and belted an RBI double to centerfield to score both runners. A flyout and ground out ended the Mojo threat and ballgame.

The Panthers will close out the 2017 season next week with a pair of games against Amarillo Tascosa.  Permian will travel to the Panhandle on Tuesday and then return home to McCanlies Field on Friday in the season finale.
