Mojo Thumps Tascosa In District Home Opener
Friday, March 24, 2017 01:51

ODESSA - Playing their first district game before a home crowd, the Panthers delivered a convincing 8-4 win over Amarillo Tascosa on Friday afternoon at McCanlies Field.  Permian utilized a four-run third inning to unarm the Rebels and never look back.

HUTSONJunior right-hander Peyton Hudson got the start on the hill for Mojo.  Permian faced four Rebel batters in the opening frame, and turned the first of three double plays to get out of the inning. The Panthers slapped two quick runs on the scoreboard when Daniel Enriquez belted out a two-out RBI triple to right field in the bottom half of the inning.  Tascosa was able to score a run in the second and two more in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.

Permian's response was impressive and gave Mojo a lead that they wouldn't relinquish the remainder of the game. Tanner Adams and Nate Kizziar occupied first and second base after getting hit on back-to-back pitches.  Enriquez's clutch one-out RBI single scored Adams to tie the game at 3-3. Seth Higdon followed with a base hit to left field to plate Kizziar, and Manny Guerrero placed a beautiful bunt down to load the bases. Christian Tschauner added an RBI single and the bases remained full. Easton Hernandez drew a walk and Permian now led 6-3. A flyout to left field and a fielder's choice ended the at-bat.

The Panthers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Adams and Kizziar hit back-to-back shots to the outfield to setup yet another pair of Mojo runs. Adams crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and Kizziar scored on a Higdon base hit to left field to give Permian an 8-3 lead.

The Rebels looked on course cut into the Mojo lead in the top of the sixth. After Hutson struck out the lead off batter, Tascosa filled the bases with three consecutive base hits. The next batter battled to a full-count before drawing a walk, which forced in a run and left the bases full.  Higdon was called upon to take over the pitching duties.  On his first pitch in relief, a fastball was hit sharply back to the mound. Higdon fielded the grounder and initiated the 1-6-3 double play to snuff out the threat. The Panthers collected three outs from four Rebel batters in the top of the seventh inning to claim the 8-4 win.  Hutson finished today's outing striking out four and walking three.

The victory is also the first district win for Jimmy Webster as Permian head coach.  He had praise for today's team effort.  "I'm proud of the kids. I thought they showed up in a good frame of mind to go play well today.  Peyton gave us a solid start on the mound, and Seth slammed the door.  Daniel got us going with a huge first inning two-run RBI triple.  The three double plays we turned today were huge."

Permian will get another crack at Frenship for a little payback next weekend.  The Panthers will visit Tiger Field for a 6:00 p.m. meeting on Friday, and then return home to host the Tigers on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at McCanlies Field.
