Mojo Baseball... My Champions

ODESSA - Friday's district home opener for Permian could easily provide several opportunities and positives. After suffering four district road losses, the Panthers will finally get to play before the home faithful at McCanlies Field as they host Amarillo Tascosa at 4:30 p.m.

First, we'll address the struggles to this point. In the 18 games played, the Panthers have won five of them. Four of the 18 games were decided by one run, while Permian is currently trying to break the cycle of an 8-game skid. The team batting average is .322, which isn't bad - yet getting runners on base and then failing to get them across the plate has been a nemesis thus far.

The Permian gloves have had their moments, committing 33 fielding errors and allowing 30 stolen bases. Mojo has utilized the services of eight pitchers on the hill. Opponent batters have drawn 59 free trips to first base and an additional six were hit by a pitch, while the Panther pitching staff has struck out 51.

Now, we can take a look at what lies ahead on the horizon for the 2017 Panthers. Friday's game with Tascosa can easily be a stepping stone to a brighter season. The Rebels are 4-14-1 overall to our 5-13-1 record. Putting a notch in the "W" column will match their district record and put the Rebels in the district cellar. A win would put Mojo only one game behind Frenship, which sits in fourth place, and three games out of first place. **Did you know Odessa High is the only 2-6A team with a season record above .500 to date?

"It's not as if we can't compete and beat any team in this district. I've watched most of these guys play the last two and three years. I know what they're capable of and it's a higher level than where we currently are. Mojo needs to start creating its own luck, which is very doable." Permian is at the proverbial fork in the road for the remainder of the season. Path #1 will involve some soul searching, digging deep, and finding a way (whatever it takes) to bring the team effort together. Path #2 is to continue business as usual, but expect to get the same result. As far as Path #3... that's not an option.

It's time to build a little confidence, put together a string of wins, and get to the level we are capable of reaching.
