Rebels Hand Panthers District Road Loss
Friday, March 17, 2017 11:09

MIDLAND - For the second time this week, Permian out-hit its opponent but came away on the short end on the scoreboard. The Panthers collected 14 hits to Midland Lee's 10, but it was the Rebels that claimed a 15-10 decision at Ernie Johnson Field in Saturday's district clash.

campaThe Panthers came out with plenty of intensity and vigor. In their first at-bat, Mojo filled the bases with its first three batters. From there, Tanner Adams hit an RBI single to score Mitch Riddle for the first run, Manny Guerrero was forced across the plate when Nate Kizziar was hit by a pitch, and Easton Hernandez slapped a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give Permian 3-0 lead. Another flyball would strand two runners.

Ricky Campa got the start on the hill for Permian and Lee would score in similar fashion, with a walk and hit batter leading to RBI singles. The Rebels recorded four singles in the bottom of the first, good enough to give them a 5-3 lead after one inning.  Permian would also commit its first of five fielding errors.

Permian left two runners on base in the second and another in the fourth frame, while Lee scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth to make it a 9-3 ballgame after four complete innings of play.

The Panthers put together an impressive effort in the top of the fifth. Rhett Bratcher led off with a base hit, and Adams followed with a single to left field. Kizziar was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Mojo. Daniel Enriquez hit into a fielder's choice, but was good enough to score Bratcher. Easton Hernandez drew a walk and again the bases were loaded with one out. Jacob Flores punched an RBI single to advance all runners, and Christian Tschauner ripped an RBI double to left field for the Panthers to add two more runs to their tally.  Riddle drew a walk to again reload the bases. With two outs, Bratcher singled to centerfield to close the gap to one run. Two runners ended up stranded as Permian trailed 9-8.

The Rebels responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with four runs, which included the Panthers giving up a grand slam homerun. Permian came back to add a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but it wouldn't be enough to get the win as Lee matched the two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers out-hit the Rebels but fell 15-10 in the 2-6A district loss.

Permian will travel to the westside of Odessa next week to play the Bronchos on Tuesday, before finally getting a home game on Friday. Mojo will host Amarillo Tascosa in the Permian 2017 district home opener at McCanlies Field on March 24.
