Late Rally Comes Up Short In Midland
Thursday, March 16, 2017 08:14

MIDLAND - After falling behind 5-0 to Midland High, Permian's three-run late rally came up short at Zachery Field on Thursday afternoon.  The Bulldogs' four-run fifth inning proved to be the difference in the 5-3 Mojo loss.

riddleAfter three scoreless innings that saw a total of three combined base hits between the two teams, Midland High posted the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth off of a called balk by the pitcher. The Bulldogs added four runs to the scoreboard with the assistance of three base hits and a pair of walks to have the Panthers trail 5-0 after five complete innings.

The Panthers came back and loaded the bases in the top of the sixth frame. Mitch Riddle got on base with a base hit, Manny Guerrero drew a walk, and Rhett Bratcher filled the bases with a single to centerfield. Tanner Adams was hit by a pitch, which forced Riddle across the plate.  Guerrero scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2. The remaining runners would remain stranded, resulting in a missed opportunity for Permian to close the deficit.

Midland batters were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth. Permian trailed by three as the seventh inning approached. A ground out and strikeout gave the Panthers a quick two outs in their last at-bat. That's when Nate Kizziar sent a shot to centerfield to keep the Mojo hopes alive. Hector Arevalo took over for Kizziar as a courtesy runner and used his speed to travel the bases and make it home when Jacob Flores belted out a RBI double to left field. Another strikeout ended the rally attempt and the Bulldogs claimed a 5-3 decision.

In the road trip loss, Permian actually out-hit Midland six to five. The Panthers failed to convert runners into crucial runs. Seth Higdon went the distance on the hill in the loss and struck out four, while walking five. Permian will return to the Tall City on Saturday to invade Midland Lee's Ernie Johnson Field.
