Panthers Split Games In Socorro Tourney
Saturday, February 25, 2017 01:41

EL PASO - After opening the Socorro ISD Tournament with a tie on Thursday, Permian collected a pair of victories while falling short in two other games to complete the weekend road trip to El Paso. The Mojo bats looked strong at the plate, and the Panthers were competitive in all five games of the tournament.

riddleThe Jimmy Webster Era began Thursday as the Panthers faced Bel Air in the tourney opener.  Permian took a 7-0 lead in the second inning, and added a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.  The Highlanders answered with 10 runs on nine hits to deadlock the game.  The contest ended in a 10-10 tie.

Mojo fared better in the afternoon game against Socorro.  The Bulldogs led 4-3 after three complete innings.  The Panthers added six runs in the fourth and four in the sixth to take a 13-4 lead.  Socorro was able to collect three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Mojo put an end to the Bulldog rally to preserve a 13-7 win.

The Panthers could have easily went 2-0 in tourney play on Friday.  Permian took a 1-0 lead over Coronado in the bottom of the first.  The Panthers added three runs in the fourth, but T-Birds notched a run in the top of the sixth frame to make it a 4-1 ballgame through six innings.  Coronado took its first lead of the game with a six-run seventh.  Trailing 7-4, Mojo could only answer with one run to fall 7-5.

Roles reversed in Friday's second game.  Eastlake led 7-4 after three innings.  In the top of the fourth, Mojo trailed 7-6 before Tyson Banks hit a two-run RBI double en route to a 10-run inning and 14-7 Permian lead.  The Panthers added another run in the fifth and final inning when Rhett Bratcher led off with a triple to right field and scored on a Hector Arevalo RBI single.  The Falcons scored three in the last at-bat but it was too little, too late in the 15-10 Mojo victory.

In Saturday's final game of the road trip, Permian was unable to make up for five errors and complete a seven inning rally against Montwood.  The Rams took a quick 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first.  After giving up three more runs in the fifth inning, the Panthers trailed 5-0 heading into the top of the seventh.  With one out and two runners on, Bratcher slapped a single into shallow centerfield to score Mitch Riddle and post Tanner Adams on third.  A sacrifice fly by Banks allowed Adams to score to cut the Ram lead to 5-2.  A ground out to the second baseman ended the game with Permian on the short end of a 5-2 loss.

According to Coach W, "I thought we hit the ball very well this weekend. A lot of positive things offensively. We got after it in every game... and had opportunities to win all five.  Bratcher had a really good weekend and Banks threw well."  Bratcher was 11-for-21 at the plate and had eight RBIs and scored nine runs.  In his 5 1/3 innings on the mound, Banks allowed only one hit while striking out 10.

The Panthers will now prepare for the second of three scheduled tournament appearances. The Tournament of Champions in Midland is slated for March 2-4.
